According to the calendar summer comes to an end next Friday. I can tell you the season officially ended here in Italy last weekend with the closing of beaches, pizzerias, and the trash removal around these areas. Don’t tell the fishermen who venture out to the wall each morning. If anything they are more vigilant since the tourists left and returned to the Northern parts of Italy.
As for me, summer ended about a month ago when I left New Hampshire and returned for year two of teaching in Italy. I have to wait another ten months until I don’t have to be on a set routine and where I can ask my partner in crime whether she wants to sleep in or venture out for our daily adventure.
Likewise I know other families are doing similar things. They have to return to their daily realities and I’m sure for some that’s a good thing. Parents were tasked with managing their children’s schedules these past few months, but now they can just drop them off at school.
That’s where my day job comes in…and so it begins again. Hopefully in between this work, a summer full of memories and new experiences will inspire some new pieces of fiction. I’ll keep you updated.
As a wise family continues to say, “Winter is coming.”
